Will the Internet frenzy ever die?
Article Abstract:
The initial public offering (IPO) market experienced a slump in the second half of 1998, but has begun reviving again in spring 1999. Most of the latest IPOs have been Internet-related. Strong interest in Internet stocks is being fuelled by venture capital firms, which in 1998 invested a record $12 billion in new companies. Internet startups accounted for around one third of venture-capital backed IPOs, from 12% in 1997. The IPO market is so dominated by Internet stocks at present that some observers have raised doubts about its wider strength.

Subversion in a cartoon world
Article Abstract:
Cartoonist Matt Groening, who became wealthy and very well-known through the television series 'The Simpsons,' has developed another series, 'Futurama,' which began showing earlier in Apr 1999 and will be screened in the UK by Sky One from Sep 1999. The series, which features a pizza delivery man named Fry and is set in 3000, draws on 'Lost in Space,' 'Star Wars' and 'Star Trek.' Critics feel that 'Futurama' is not as good as 'The Simpsons,' but the series still has the potential for considerable longer-term success.

Big Blue's golden boy
Article Abstract:
International Business Machines (IBM) has seen a significant revival in its fortunes since Lou Gerstner took over in Apr 1993. He has brought about a change in organization, culture and marketing, and IBM is now once more one of the world's leading technology companies. There has been particularly strong growth in the Global Services division, which has benefited from the growth of electronic business and the trend for companies to contract out important information technology tasks.
