Judge William Brennan gained a strong reputation for his firm commitment to protecting individual liberty and equality. He was involved in defending the rights of criminal defendants early in his career, and later played a major role in shaping decisions in the United States Supreme Court relating to the flexibility of the Constitution. He attracted some criticism for his view of the US as a secular democracy, but was also highly respected for his civil rights work.

Judge Michael Argyle
Article Abstract:
Judge Michael Argyle studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, England, and was called to the Bar in 1938. He served with the 7th Queen's Own Hussars during the second world war, and was awarded the Military Cross. He returned to the Bar in 1947, and became the Recorder of Northampton, England, in 1962 and of Birmingham, England, from 1965 to 1972. He was then appointed a Circuit Judge. He believed that harsh sentences should be used to control crime.
