Workers bid farewell to the doomed yards of Gdansk
Article Abstract:
Workers throughout Poland are expressing great anger at the decision to close down the shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, where the Solidarity movement was created. The closure of the shipyard, which faces severe financial difficulties, will lead to the loss of 3,800 jobs. Some feel that the shipyard's workers have been abandoned by Lech Walesa, who once worked there and became president in the early 1990s. The shipyard will only be saved if a deal can be reached with the Gdynia and Szczecin yards, which have full order books.

Article Abstract:
The alliance instigated in 1991 in the town of Weimar, Germany, by the foreign ministers of France, Germany and Poland is becoming a clear power bloc in Europe. These countries are now to hold a summit meeting in autumn 1996, where issues including joint military operations and action against organised crime will be discussed. In Poland, the alliance is seen as having potential to revitalise European integration.
