Strikes and solidarity teach the French elite a lesson
Article Abstract:
French president Jacques Chirac came to power in May 1995 partly on the basis of his promises to remove social divisions in the country between the rich and the poor. However, it was in fact concern about the government's plans for welfare reform and the possibility of a public sector pay freeze which united ordinary people in protest against the government. They felt that prime minister Alain Juppe had not consulted them, and were therefore in sympathy with those who took strike action, even though this caused extensive disruption to everyday life.

French see a glimmer at end of the tunnel
Article Abstract:
Some French publice sector workers are now beginning to end their strike action, and there are signs of a return to normal life. However, this does not mean that the conflict between the public sector and the government has been resolved. Leading trade unions CGT and Force Ouvriere have announced plans for more national demonstrations, and are still calling for the government to competely withdraw plans for welfare reform.

France brought to a standstill by strikes
Article Abstract:
A demonstration involving up to 50,000 people from many different trade unions has been staged in Paris, France, in protest at the government's plans to reform the social security system. There were many small strikes connected with the demonstration, causing considerable difficulties with internal and external transport links. Most banks remained open, but labour exchange, post offices and benefit offices were closed.
