Recycling on the Mississippi
Article Abstract:
Water level changes in the Mississippi River has made the swing bridge in Hannibal, MO, a safety hazard to passing boats. Norfolk Southern Railroad, owner of the bridge, suggested that an unused vertical lift bridge inFlorence, AL, be used in its place. The exchange would save $1 million in construction costs and 12 months of construction time. The construction would be done in two stages. A new substructure and a control house would be built first and followed by the construction of the superstructure. The US Coast Guard would reimburse Norfolk Southern for $11 million in construction costs.

Cellular confinement system helps hold slope
Article Abstract:
The construction of the $2 million railway bridge over the DesJardins canal, which connects Burlington Bay to a conservation area called Cootes Paradise, involved cutting a path into the side of a slope in the preserve. The challenge in reinstating the slope was preventing the fertile topsoil from sliding into the canal. The design developed to hold the slope used four inches of large cell Geoweb material with three polymeric tendons/section. Twenty four and 36 inches long J-pins were used to anchor the system to the slope.
