Article Abstract:
The discovery of buckminsterfullerenes as the third form of carbon allotrope known has promppted chemists all over the world to search for similar molecules. Scientists are optimistic that with new techniques and the growing number of new theories abouyt pure carbon molecules, more of them can be synthesized in the future. Some of the proposed models are graphyne, cubic graphite and carbophanes. These substances could prove to be valuable engineering materials like their predecessors.

Fullerene formation and annealing
Article Abstract:
Scientists are trying to elucidate how the carbon clusters known as fullerines are formed. One of the basic mechanisms involved in fullerine formation is the the Stone-Wales transformation; however, activation barriers are extremely high for this type of mechanism to take place

Origins of fullerenes in rocks
Article Abstract:
A second study of carbon-rich rocks from Shunga in Karelia, Russia, failed to find any detectable fullerene content. The fullerenes found in a previous study of a Shunga sample may have been caused by a localized geologic event.
