The US Navy would continue to employ Microsoft's NT operations system for its Smart Ship cost reduction program despite the software's disappointing performance in Virginia in 1997. The program, aimed at reducing the agency's crew level, calls for the use of computerized naval ships.

On the origins of subspecies

Scientists are using DNA analysis as a means to find the home islands of the adult tortoises held at the Charles Darwin Research Station on the Sta Cruz Island of the Galapagos archipelago. Blood samples are taken from the tortoises to identify their places of origin.
