Automation and production efficiency: an empirical analysis of ten manufacturing industries in a newly industrialised economy
Article Abstract:
The effects of automation to production technical efficiency in Singapore are studied. Several production indices, such as average technical efficiencies of firms, capital intensities, capital and labor elasticities and the marginal rate of technical substitution between labor and capital are analyzed. Using data from ten major industries, several factors are identified to be positively correlated with efficiency. It is found that the principal determinant of technical efficiency is the average wage paid to workers, while capital intensity interests policy makers greatly.

High-involvement innovation through continuous improvement
Article Abstract:
Continuous improvement (CI) is an incremental organization-wide innovative process, which requires employees' involved participation to focus and sustain the implementation of the process. CI stresses the implementation, not the conceptual, aspect, since learning new strategy requires that new behavioral patterns be made a routinary activity. But there must be a constant assessment of the implementation to ensure the elaboration of the workforce and the system.
