Backlash strikes at affirmative action programs
Article Abstract:
The Supreme Court precipitated a backlash against affirmative action programs with its ruling in favor of a white-owned company that lost a bid to a minority firm due to a federal affirmative action program. Several state and federal anti-affirmative action legislative initiatives are discussed.

Origins of lichen fungi explored
Article Abstract:
A team at the Smithsonian Institution has determined that lichen fungi belong to several different fungus groups, suggesting that the fungus-algae symbiotic partnerships that comprise lichen evolved independently many times. DNA sequences provided the basis for comparison.

Mutant mice mimic human sickle cell anemia
Article Abstract:
Scientists at the Univ of Alabama and Lawrence Berkeley Natl Laboratory have developed mice that produce the mutant form of hemoglobin responsible for sickle cell anemia. These mice could become critical in the testing of drugs and gene therapies for the disease.
