Bioassay-directed chemical analysis of Los Angeles airborne particulate matter using a human cell mutagenicity assay
Article Abstract:
A bioassay-directed chemical analysis was used to evaluate the human cell mutagenicity of airborne fine particulate matter present in Los Angeles. By employing the h1A1v2 human cell mutagenicity assay and GC/MS, researchers were able to determine fractions which manifest human cell mutagens and identify the chemical characters of such mutagens. Six unsubstituted polycyclic aromatic compounds, some of which include cyclopental, benzopyrene and benzofluoranthene, have been found to possess the greatest mutagenic potency.

Comparison of the Ames Salmonella assay and Mutatox genotoxicity assay for assessing the mutagenicity of polycyclic aromatic compounds in porewater from Athabasca oil sands mature fine tailings
Article Abstract:
Researchers from Canada identified several polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAC) in porewater from oil sands mature tailings at the Athabasca region of Alberta, Canada and compared their responses with Ames and Mutatox genotoxicity mutagenicity assays. The research will try to assess whether tailings ponds contaminated with PACs can be converted into a productive lake.
