COBE seeks universe's first blush

COBE, which has explored the universe's beginning by mapping the cosmic microwave radiation, is now exploring the emergence of stars and galaxies. By sorting the cosmic infrared background from the infrared of nearby stars, astronomers hope to glimpse stars too faint to be seen with telescopes.

William Ditto, who in 1990 coaxed chaotic systems into periodicity, has now reversed the process. The method involves tiny calculated perturbations of a vibrating metal ribbon. The potential lies in keeping such systems as brain waves from becoming periodic, which can cause epileptic seizures.
