Landing the big one
Article Abstract:
Aircraft makers and airlines have been developing designs for new, larger airplanes that will weigh more than 1 million lbs and carry between 500 and 650 passengers. Deliveries of such aircraft are expected to begin between 1999 and 2004. This means that many airports will have to modify their operations or improve their facilities to accommodate these superjumbo planes. Two of the most crucial issues for airports hoping to serve superjumbo fleets are wingtip clearances on parallel taxiways and obstacle-free zone clearances on runways.
