Chemists and solid-state physicists are developing methods for building solid materials out of molecular 'building blocks,' enabling scientists to make materials of desired characteristics. Many of the scientists in the field consider the molecular constructions to be analogous to items made out of toys, such as Lego blocks or Tinkertoys.
