SAB project pushes integrated approach to risk-based decisions
Article Abstract:
The Environmental Protection Agency's Science Advisory Board (SAB) is advocating for an integrated approach to environmental decision-making. The SAB members, who will present a draft report in April 1998, were asked by Congress to update a list of the top ecological and health risks facing the US outlined in a 1990 SAB report. Recognizing the difficulty of developing a new prioritized list of risks, SAB members have instead developed a system, called the Integrated Environmental Decision-Making Framework, to help scientists and regulators correlate the various risks.

EPA calls on industry to voluntarily screen high-production chemicals
Article Abstract:
The EPA would like the chemical industry to voluntarily provide toxicity testing results for high-volume, high-production chemicals. The ability of the agency to require companies to provide toxicity information is currently very restricted. The EPA does not have access to 71% of the approximately 3000 commercial chemicals now being produced. Having access to toxicity results could help in the determination of whether these chemicals cause childhood cancers.
