Enter the machine: where does one go to find the home that heralds the dawn of the domestic Internet age?
Article Abstract:
A house in a new housing development in Watford, England, is a showcase for the new technologies that will be used in the future. The Internet home is a joint venture between Laing Homes and Cisco Systems and contains appliances which can be controlled by computers both in and outside the building. In the kitchen, a stock control system tracks food usage from the fridge and can order replacement items from the local supermarket, while the 70-plus telephone, TV, computer and power sockets scattered around the house enable electronic systems to be used in every room.

Plastic fantastic: Components made out of metal are seen as fair game for polymer engineers
Article Abstract:
Plastics, such as the crystalline Nylon engineering polymer Zytel is used for applications including air intake manifolds, engine covers, radiator header tanks, fans and thermostat housings. New applications in the automotive field give the industry an opportunity to extend their influence without having to replace proven technology. Sensor technology is featured in cars and each integrated circuit must be encapsulated in a hard wearing material.
