The magnetic attraction: a long race to create faster memory chips that never lose data yields prototypes at last
Article Abstract:
Inventor Richard M. Lienau has come up with a computer memory chip that can retain data even without power. His invention is much faster than dynamic random access memory chips and its ability to hold data in the absence of power is attributed to an array of minuscule magnets. Lienau's breakthrough triggered other researchers to develop working prototypes of single-bit magnetic memory cells.

Ultrasound's new phase: a major advance yields deeper, clear views of the body
Article Abstract:
Acuson Corp's new Sequoia ultrasound system provides much more detailed images than conventional systems. The Sequoia system translates phase information in ultrasound echoes into visual images. The system is ready for market, but will cost 40% more than conventional ultrasound systems.

New chip off the old block: can DNA microprobes do for genetics what microprocessors did for computing?
Article Abstract:
Affymetrix's GeneChip systems may revolutionize the field of genetic medicine in the same way that microprocessors revolutionized the computer industry. The microchips, which process DNA, use only one drop of blood to screen for diseases such as AIDS.
