Envisioning an artificial retina
Article Abstract:
A microchip planted in the eye may restore partial vision to the blind. The Project for a Retinal Implant, a joint effort of Massachusetts research institutions, is developing electronic sensors to replace lost rods and cones in the retina. The device is being tested on rabbits.

Live long and prosper?

The continuously increasing life expectancy threatens the stability of government entitlement programs as the baby boomer generation begins to retire early next century. How much life expectancy may continue to grow and what the upper limits of longevity may be is examined.

When rigor meets reality

The trend in ecological research since the 1960s has been experimentation involving statistical analysis of theories that can be tested. Some ecologists maintain this move toward hard science has gone too far and is leading to attempts to oversimplify the natural world.
