Experts discuss options for New York City commuter rail tunnel
Article Abstract:
More than 30 tunneling experts from around the world converged in New York City, NY, in Apr, 1999, to discuss with city officials on how the $4.3-billion East Side Access project should be constructed. The latter is the biggest project ever undertaken by the city's Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). The plan to be completed within a span of 10 years will give access to railroad commuters via the Grand Central Terminal. Howard Sackel, MTA deputy chief program executive, said tunnel construction may start by 2002, depending on the outcome of the borings and geotechnical studies.

Congress snubs Chicago's Wacker Drive rehab plan
Article Abstract:
The Congress granted only $25 million out of the $350 million required for the rehabilitation of the Wacker Drive in Chicago, IL. The Chicago Dept of Transportation's Bureau of Bridges and Transit conducted an ocular inspection of the infrastructure and discovered that majority of the expansion joints and the supporting columns of the upper road had deteriorated. The rehabilitation will also require widening of the intersections and increase of the vertical clearances. To avoid further damage, weight restrictions were imposed on trucks traversing the road.
