Fast foundation for soft clay
Article Abstract:
The retrofit for the Ontario Hydro Lambton Thermo Generating Station involved the construction of additional buildings and a foundation for a 550 ft chimney. Morrison Knudsen Corp faced site constraints such as an unsuitable soft clay soil, a shallow bedrock depth and inadequate data on equipment loads and installation requirements. The contractor adopted a fast-track design/construction scheme, conducted simultaneous site investigations and foundation designs programs, performed extensive tests and constantly communicated with the different parties involved with the project to meet the project deadline.

Power struggle
Article Abstract:
Florida Power and Light Co appointed a design team to study the replacement of the deteriorating wooden H-frames carrying a 115 kV transmission line over the Tomoko River. The design team composed of Jerry Penny Chip Fankhauser and Jerry Wong decided to use steel towers and avoid using structures in the river or its tributaries. The move to keep all structures out of the water minimized harm to aquatic life and the wetlands. Observers also think of the transmission line replacement as an improvement due to the fewer structures.

Soft ground not easy ground for TBM
Article Abstract:
The King County Department of Metropolitan Services is constructing a soft-ground tunnel to divert wastewater for secondary treatment and store storm-water overflows in the West Seattle drainage basin, WA. Site constraints, geology and construction issues affected the design of the 10,200-foot project, which will divert dry weather sanitary flow and store excess flow during wet weather at the Alki plant, Seattle.
