Florida State's magnet lab: attracting funds and hopes
Article Abstract:
Florida State University's (FSU) National High Magnetic Field Laboratory is poised to become a world-class player in condensed-matter physics. Since FSU won a grant away from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to establish the facility in 1990, the lab has raised enough funding to keep running into 2000.

Nonequilibrium structures in condensed systems
Article Abstract:
Y. Tabe and H. Yokoyama found that external activation may lead to qualitative changes in the behavior of a condensed molecular system. Nonequilibrium structures can exist in condensed systems with attractive interaction between particles, if external activation acts against cohesion.

The metal-insulator transition in correlated disordered systems
Article Abstract:
Researchers have found that applying pressure to the chalcogenide compound Ni(S,Se)2 produces a continuous metal-to-insulator transition at very low temperatures. The roles of electron-electron interactions and disorder in the transition process are discussed.
