Formation of hydrogen peroxide and depletion of oxalic acid in atmospheric water by photolysis of iron(III)-oxalato complexes
Article Abstract:
The presence of hydrogen peroxide in atmospheric water has important implications for atmospheric chemistry. The acidification of cloud and rainwater occurs when hydrogen peroxide helps to oxidize dissolved sulfur dioxide to sulfuric acid. Oxalic acid depletion and hydrogen peroxide production through photochemical/chemical cycling of iron(III)-oxalato complexes were studied. The results indicated that the production of hydrogen peroxide through sunlight photolysis may be a key source of hydrogen peroxide in the atmospheric liquid phase.

113Cd NMR binding studies of Cd-fulvic acid complexes: evidence of fast exchange
Article Abstract:
The reaction of cadmium (Cd2+) with Suwannee River fulvic acid was studied by pH titrations and 113Cd nuclear magnetic resonance. The binding of Cd2+ to fulvic acid complexes was influenced by pH and fulvic acid concentration. At pH 6.4, the fraction of carboxylic acid groups that are deprotonated is 0.89. The chemical shift value of 113Cd changes with a variation in fulvic acid concentration but at a constant Cd2+ concentration. The binding constant based on chemical shift data was 6.7 x 10(super2) mL/mg.
