Premature aging gene discovered
Article Abstract:
The gene for Werner's syndrome, a rare premature-aging disease, has been identified. Gerard Schellenberg's Seattle-based team, which had been sharing data with competing labs, found the gene with large-scale sequencing. The coded protein is a helicase, which unwinds DNA for repair and replication.

Genome researchers take the pledge: data sharing
Article Abstract:
The National Center for Human Genome Research bestowed grants on six genetics labs with the stipulation that they would share raw DNA-sequence data almost immediately. Patents on preliminary data are discouraged. The grantees agreed, but worried that quick release of data could sacrifice accuracy.
