High over Shanghai
Article Abstract:
The $450 million, Jin Mao Building in China, consisting of a tower and an attached low-rise Podium Building, will be the tallest building in China and the third tallest in the world after its completion in 1998. It is being built in an area characterized by poor soils, extreme winds and seismicity. The superstructure uses mixed structural steel and reinforced concrete. The outrigger truss system helps resisting lateral loads, while the octagonal core provides torsional resistance. Gravity loads are distributed to remove uplifts in the exterior composite megacolumns
