Homing in on the human genome
Article Abstract:
Sequencing techniques used by The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) and Johns Hopkins Univ in their successful completion of the genome map for H influenzae may be able to speed up work on the Human Genome Project (HGP). Techniques currently used by HGP and the TIGR method are compared.

Entering the postgenome era
Article Abstract:
Research on how genes act together to regulate function is the next step in work on human genetics. One new technique for this research is serial analysis of gene expression. A microarray assay of gene activities is another new methodology.

Molecular machines may aid gene expression
Article Abstract:
There has been a flurry of research on proteins that disrupt histones, proteins that pack DNA into nucleosomes, to get at the DNA and allow transcription. Several studies and their implications are discussed.
