Impact echo strikes home
Article Abstract:
Impact echo is a non-destructive testing technology that allows structural engineers to evaluate the internal condition of concrete structures. This method introduces a transient stress pulse into the test structure by mechanical impact on the surface. The reflected waves are then recorded by means of a displacement transducer which also measures the frequency associated with the stress wave resonance between the surface. The flaw can then be determined by analyzing the variations in the stress wave resonance.

Monumental restorations
Article Abstract:
Nonintrusive geophysical surveys and monitoring systems are effective for detecting deterioration of historical buildings and restoring them, and for analyzing and describing the structural behavior. Integration of sonic and radar tests, and static and dynamic monitoring systems with traditional analyses can reveal important information for destruction-free renovations and interventions. The techniques have been used for analyzing and restoring several important historical Italian structures.

Cable-stay conundrum
Article Abstract:
Rain and wind-induced vibrations on cable-stayed bridges have resulted into cost and safety concerns. Usually designed and built to surpass 300 m, these bridges accommodate vibration phenomenon related to the aerodynamics and structural dynamic response of the cables and the superstructure of the bridge. To better understand the phenomenon, engineers should analyze the complexities associated with the mechanical and analytical modeling related to the design of the bridges.
