The blackest of arts
Article Abstract:
There is an acute shortage of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) engineers in Britain due to lack of proper coverage of EMC engineering courses in universities and inadequate in-house training. Despite greater awareness of EMC, there is no corresponding increase in EMC specialists, as acquiring proper knowledge of EMC is difficult and practical experience is necessary. Hatfield Polytechnic has announced a distance-learning training package in EMC identification and design. Most companies are, however, forced to start training courses of their own to meet their requirements for qualified EMC engineers.

Clear road ahead
Article Abstract:
Pilkington's Technology Centre, together with US colleagues is reseaching automotive glass techniques, such as overcoming the problems of ultraviolet fading and heat ingress. Libbey-Ownes-Ford, Pilkington's US subsdiary, has recently launched EZ-Kool glass, which can reduce solar heat transmission to 43% and UV transmission to 33%. Other techniques include automatic rain sensors that automatically switch the windscreen wipers on whenever it rains, and automotive head up displays (HUDs) which project safety information directly at the driver's field of vision.

The price of peace
Article Abstract:
Many defense companies in the UK are diversifying into civilian markets, often to stay afloat. Major defense contractors lost 34,000 jobs between Feb 1990 and Apr 1992; subcontractor losses push this higher. Most diversifying companies try to enter areas that use similar technology. The Defence Manufacturers' Assn recently held seminars on moving into offshore engineering and construction. One problem is the brevity of most civilian contracts.
