Copper speciation and binding by organic matter in copper-contaminated streamwater
Article Abstract:
Fulvic acid fraction of dissolved organic carbon and synthetic organic compounds was analyzed from copper contaminated stream water samples collected for seven sampling stations in Massachusetts. Competitive binding by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid affected the binding of Cu with fulvic acids in the stream water samples. Furthermore, the toxicity of Cu was reduced by the presence of organic ligands due to ligand binding.

Organic carbon and nitrogen content associated with colloids and suspended particulates from the Mississippi River and some of its tributaries
Article Abstract:
The colloid phase of suspended material in the Mississippi River appears to be capable of carrying a greater load of organic nitrogen and organic carbon than the suspended particulate phase. Samples from the river, which were taken a 16 different sites, were centrifuged and filtrated to enable the isolation of the two phases.
