Leaving a bad taste: the furor in Britain raises health safety concerns about genetically modified foods

The dismissal of UK scientist Arpad Pusztai from the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, has brought to public attention health risks associated with genetically engineered foods. Pusztai revealed in a parliamentary hearing that rats fed genetically modified potatoes suffered damaged immune systems and arrested growth of vital organs.
