Mining for building expansion
Article Abstract:
The mining techniques adapted by engineers for IBM's expansion of its semiconductor manufacturing operations on an underutilized basement space are discussed. This creative approach was used to satisfy building codes requirements on horizontal emergency access and egress without disturbing the vibration-sensitive operations aboveground. A series of contiguous soil dowels to presupport the ground, jet-grouted columns for underpining the existing structure and staged mined excavation with installation of steel rib assemblieswere used as the project was finished in less than a year.

Lessons from nonfailures
Article Abstract:
Structural engineers should be careful when examining buildings for structural defects and declaring them unfit for use. Engineers should make a detailed study of building design and a proper study of the sensitivity of important structural elements in comparison to changes in concrete strength. Engineers should no rely totally on computer analysis of data, as there could be some errors in it. A case study of two buildings by two firms is given.
