NIH adjusts attitudes toward women
Article Abstract:
Within three months after the National Institutes of Health (NIH) came under criticism by the General Accounting Office (GAO) for neglecting women's health issues, acting NIH director William F. Raub created an office of research on women's health. The office will be run initially by Ruth L. Kirschstein, now head of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, until a permanent director is found. In addition, Raub found funds in the 1991 budget to support the new office, and wants the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts (used by researchers in preparing grant applications) to emphasize that female subjects should be included in federally funded studies. Kirschstein plans an NIH-sponsored conference on women's health, and wants to establish priorities for research on related topics. Motivation for the move by NIH was provided by the Congressional Caucus for Women's Issues, which had called for the initial GAO report. ..DE (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
