The NIMH is troubled by delays in finding a new permanent director and by Republicans in Congress who hope to discontinue much of the Institute's research. Laurie Flynn of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill believes NIH director Harold Varmus' selection criteria are too exclusive.

Reanalysis confirms results of 'tainted' study
Article Abstract:
Reanalysis of the results of a study of more than 2,000 breast cancer patients supported the initial conclusion that lumpectomy is as effective mastectomy in treating the disease. The reanalysis of the B-06 study was necessitated when a physician falsified data.

The National Breast Cancer Coalition successfully lobbied to double the amount of federal funds spent on breast cancer research and is demanding a role in determining how the funds are spent. However, some scientists resist the trend to earmark research funds.
