Nitrate-induced photolysis in natural waters: controls on concentrations of hydroxyl radical photo-intermediates by natural scavenging agents
Article Abstract:
Photoreaction of nitrates is responsible for the production of the hydroxyl radical OH which acts as an intermediary in the photochemistry of natural water. The scavenging of OH by dissolved organic matter was shown to be more significant than scavenging bycarbonate forms. A framework constructed to estimate the relevance of nitrate-influenced, hydroxyl-mediated photolysis of pollutants was able to assess the half-life of acetochlor in contaminated bodies of water.

Variation in photoreactivity of iron hydroxides taken from an acidic mountain stream
Article Abstract:
The reactivity of iron hydroxides taken from sites progressively downstream from the acid mine drainage (AMD) inflow decreased while fresher iron hydroxides exhibited increased photoreduction in the presence of two simple organic ligands. Aging iron hydroxides become less photoreactive due to the decrease in the number of active surface sites, a change in the nature of the surface sites, or a combination of both.
