Nuclear Functions Charge Ahead
Article Abstract:
Research on Xenopus oocytes indicates that there is a proofreading system in the cell nucleus and a pre-tRNA processing pathway that prevent pre-tRNAs from crossing the boundary separating the nucleus and the cytosol before processing is complete. The mechanism of the proofreading system is discussed.

The transcriptional paradox: octamer factors and B and T cells
Article Abstract:
Researchers have discovered an accessory protein called BOB that mediates cell type-specific gene expression of immunoglobulins. BOB is expressed constitutively in B lymphocytes. It must be activated by a kinase for expression in T lymphocytes.

A new turn (or two) for twist
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that a homolog of the gene twist, which encodes a transcription factor needed for the formation of the early mesoderm in the fruit fly Drosophila, is an important regulator of muscle differentiation in vertebrates.
