Old feuds, new finds mark anthropologists' meeting
Article Abstract:
The 1993 American Association of Physical Anthropologists annual meeting had little in the way of new discoveries, but old controversies were revisited. Among the topics of discussion was the origin of syphilis in Europe, the genetics of gorillas and the possibility of speech by Neanderthal humans.

NRC urges sea change in marine studies
Article Abstract:
The NRC's 'Understanding Marine Biodiversity' report claims that research on aquatic biodiversity receives less emphasis than terrestrial biodiversity research, even though more than two-thirds of the planet is underwater. The report calls for more research on the systematics of marine organisms.
