On Luenberger observer design for constrained mechanical systems
Article Abstract:
A novel design methodology for the Luenberger observer based on the descriptor system approach is described. The proposed observer offers an asymptotic estimation of the displacement z, generalized constraint force mu and velocities z simultaneously. It is shown that a descriptor system always contains a Luenberger observer provided the system is proper, regular and finite detectable. The design algorithm makes use of the staircase form transformation of matrix pencils.

Cast-iron-column strength in renovation design
Article Abstract:
Donald Friedman's article regarding the strength of cast-iron-columns and their impact on renovations is weak due to the use of old building codes in the computations for load and resistance factor (LRFD). A better LRFD computation for cast iron columns can be used using parameters such as resistance factor, nominal strength, gross area and critical strength. This has a reliability factor within the range of 2.6 to 4.7.

Design of sandwich panels with prismatic cores
Article Abstract:
Optimizations are performed to identify designs of prismatic core sandwich panels that exhibit load capacity under bending loads. When optimized solely for transverse loading, prismatic panels outperform those with corrugated core, but only at low loads.
