Preventing lead poisoning: view from private sector
Article Abstract:
The paint industry is seriously considering the dissemination of scientific information to people who are at greatest risk from lead poisoning. Private industries, including the paint industry have created the Coalition for Lead Safe Communities, to check the risk of lead poisoning in urban children. Public opinion is being made to focus on collaboration between property owners and tenants to decrease exposure to lead in urban homes. In addition to holding demonstration projects to curb the incidents of lead poisoning, the coalition controls the hazard by generating inter-community dialogue.

The Laborers' International Union of North America has decided on concrete steps to prevent on-the-job exposure to lead. The Union has promoted safety-training programs for members who face dangers of lead poisoning on construction, rehabilitation, and demolition sites. The Union also runs a training program for iron workers and demolition experts who are exposed to steel structures that have lead contaminated paints. The grant from the Federal Highway Administration received by the Laborers' Health and Safety Fund will be utilized to safeguard the health of workers at risk from lead.
