Program funding, Italian style: AIDS research
Article Abstract:
Italy's National Program for AIDS Research has been under a funding freeze due to complaints that its funding is biased and its basic-research focus neglects AIDS victims. After an overhaul by Health Minister Rosy Bindi, the program will be more clinically oriented, with new criteria for grant assessment.

Funding reform fights on against researchers' apathy
Article Abstract:
Italy's National Research Council is in the midst of reform, under government threats of 20% annual budget cuts if the organization is not sorted out. It is currently made up of 350 scattered research units which hamper cooperation and interdisciplinary research and lead to duplication.
