Downsizing squeezes basic research at the USGS
Article Abstract:
Congressional budget demands and a reorganization by director Gordon Eaton will result in an unknown number of layoffs and a serious reduction in the basic-research agenda. The Geologic Division, now the main source of basic research and data on geology, will be mission- and customer-oriented.

Earth's core spins at its own rate
Article Abstract:
Seismologists have discovered that the Earth's inner core spins more quickly than the rest of the planet. The core has gained nearly one tenth of a turn since the mid-1960s. The rate of rotation could be as high as once in 400 years.
