Proposed increases follow 5-year plan: Japan's R&D budget

Various Japanese ministries have submitted ambitious requests for R&D budget increases, in line with Japan's plan to double 1992 science spending levels by 2000. When the proposals get through the Diet, they are still likely to be higher than the overall 8% proposed government spending hike.

War on debt puts big science under fire: reform in Japan

Two Japanese government panels working on reforms to streamline bureaucracy and control the fast-growing national debt may jeopardize big-science projects, according to reports. The Science and Technology Agency's budget and a 5-year R&D spending program adopted in 1996 may be cut.
