Removal of silver in photographic processing waste by TiO2-based photocatalysis
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of using titania-based photocatalysis in removing silver ions from black and white photographic processing waste was evaluated by experiments using spent fixer solutions. Titania-based photocatalysis was shown to reduce silver ions to its metallic form and increased the amount of silver recovered by three times as much as that of titania. Thiosulfate was observed to play a critical role in the reduction process by increasing the reaction rate and by stabilizing the resulting silver ions in solution.

Microbial reduction of crystalline iron(III) oxides: influence of oxide surface area and potential for cell growth
Article Abstract:
The oxide surface area and site concentration of the solid phase control the rate and extent of microbial iron(III) oxide reduction. This was gleaned from an examination of the quantitative aspects of microbial crystalline iron(III) oxide reduction using a dissimilatory iron(III) oxide-reducing bacterium. Findings indicate that the iron(III) oxide surface site concentration in the soil or sediment matrix will determine the potential for cell growth and Fe(II) generation.
