Research on child and adolescent mental disorders
Article Abstract:
At least 12 percent of children under age 18 have a serious mental illness. These mental disorders include depression, anxiety, attention deficit and antisocial behavior, as well as developmental deficits in the ability to learn, think and communicate. The costs of childhood mental illness include expenditures for treatment, future lost wages if disability is severe, and an enormous emotional toll on the patient and his family. While 7.5 million children in the US suffer from mental disorders, only 2.5 million receive treatment. This demonstrates an urgent need for increased availability of treatment. In addition, research in childhood and adolescent mental health has lacked adequate funding for many years. While recent advances in understanding the scientific basis for mental illness are promising, most of the findings have been applied only to adults. Research on children is hampered by the complexities of their growth and development and by ethical restrictions on the enrollment of minors in research studies. Perhaps the greatest obstacle to expanding research on childhood mental health is the shortage of trained researchers. One survey found that of 4,500 child psychiatrists, fewer than 100 spent more than 30 percent of their time on research. A report recently released by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences outlines a plan to stimulate progress in research on childhood mental illness through increased training, funding and recognition for researchers in this field. Stay attuned to monthly profit/loss statements
Article Abstract:
Builders can make use of monthly cash flow statements to enable them to monitor more closely the usage of one of their most valuable assets. These will also enable the management to spot financial mismatches and separate cash sources from business operations, investments and financing activities. A more detailed statement will be more useful because it can give the management information such as changes in loans per lender. Companies should also integrate cash flow statements for two or more years to give them a more accurate picture of their financial performances.
