Dounreay told to act on safety issues
Article Abstract:
The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has advised the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) to invest considerable resource, time and effort into upgrading the Dounreay nuclear site. Although the site has been declared safe following an on-site inspection conducted by the HSE, Dounreay has gained a reputation for being accident-prone and irresponsible in managing nuclear materials. The site's problems have been traced to a number of factors, primary of which are the organizational changes that have been effected within the UKAEA since 1994.

Machine safety
Article Abstract:
Machines are commonly referred to in terms of risk categories following the introduction of the Standard BS EN 954-1: Safety of machinery - Safety related parts of control systems. The categories of BS EN 954-1 describe performance with regard to the occurrence of faults, thus the actual rate of integrity that can be achieved will depend on the nature of the components and the approach taken. Such approaches are covered by categories considering reliability and design structure.
