Seismic retrofit
Article Abstract:
Many rehabilitation projects result from seismic concerns, especially for structures located in eartquake-prone areas. Morley ConstructionVP C. Terry Dooley emphasized the importance of expertise and good working relationships among concerned parties in such projects since these involve works beyond the scope of some codes. The construction team needs to ascertain structral conditions to anticipate potential problems and set the structural condition they wish to achieve during intermediate stages and at the final outcome. The team must also consider structural elements that may influence thechoice of rehabilitation methods.

Rock 'n' roll in Cleveland
Article Abstract:
Architect I.M. Pei's design for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, OH, brought together different geometrical forms and a glass tent with Lake Erie serving as a backdrop. The tent roof is supported by a grid of 16 trusses with bowstrings perpendicular to the roof plane and curving as much as 6.5 feet from it at their centers. The structure is supported by a pile cap over cast-in-place concrete piles, while another pile cap resting on H-piles serves as foundation to its in-lake members.
