The nation's and the world's long-term threats, such as climate changes, often get ignored altogether or are even made worse by shortsighted decisions where responsible people look out for the future despite paying attention to the present. Science can reliably predict the implications of alternative policy choices to determine optimal course of action and specify trade-offs that society must inevitably make.
