Solid state 15N NMR study of pyridine adsorption on clay minerals
Article Abstract:
Sorption mechanisms of pyridine on a clay mineral, hectorite, were examined using a solid state nuclear magnetic resonance method. Findings showed a higher mobility of pyridine in the interlayers of dehydrated clays compared to hydrated ones. On the hydrated hectorites, pyridine interacted primarily through hydrogen bonding to the interlayer water. Pyridine solvated the interlayers on the dehydrated K-hectorite. One layer of hydration water to which pyridine hydrogen bonds was retained by dehydrated Ca- and Mg-hectorites. Water facilitated the intercalation of pyridine, except only for Al-hectorite where almost no intercalation was noted without water.

Influence of aqueous pH and ionic strength on the wettability of quartz in the presence of dense non-aqueous-phase liquids
Article Abstract:
Contact angle, and consequently capillary pressure, is a function of pH and ionic strength. This was gleaned from an evaluation of mineral wettability by the dense non-aqueous-phase liquids trichloroethylene and carbon tetrachloride as a function of aqueous pH and ionic strength for a water-DNAPL-quartz system. For both DNAPLs, contact angles were at a maximum near the pH at the point of zero surface charge of quartz. These also declined as pH and ionic strength were increased.
