Sun driven: Preparations are well underway for the solar powered vehicles that will test the mettle of drivers and the innovative skills of designers for the greatest race under the sun
Article Abstract:
The World Solar Challenge (WSC) will take place in Australia in October. It is a prestigious race in the environmentally sound sporting calender. A group from Britain have built the Sun Surfer, a solar cycle which they plan to enter in the solar cycle race, covering half the route from Alice Springs to Adelaide. A team from South Bank University, London, will be entering its Mad Dog III car which will feature a curved solar array, an aerodynamically tested computer generated body and refined suspension and steering.

Water babies
Article Abstract:
An innovative underwater vehicle has been developed for underwater research called Autosub. Autosub uses leading edge robotics technology and cost 5.3 million pounds sterling to build. It can travel up to 500 meters beneath the ocean's surface in sub-zero temperatures. Autosub's design principles are discussed and illustrated. It has been used on 144 missions in ocean research. Further research is continuing to design a similar vessel capable of descending up to 2,500 meters.
