The arch bridge mystery
Article Abstract:
Results of an engineering study commissioned by Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) revealed that stresses due to ASR-induced concrete expansion, freeze-thaw cycles and heat caused the deterioration of the historic Manayunk railroad bridge. The structure, which passes through several major roadways and the Schuykill River in Philadelphia, is no longer being used but SEPTA wants it rehabilitated because the city of Manayunk is experience an era of urban renewal. Remedial actions being undertaken are designed to prevent water from getting into the mass of concrete and generating freeze-thaw and ASR stresses.
