The gene doctor is in
Article Abstract:
Victor McKusick started his career with cardiology, moving on to medical genetics and on to serving as physician-in-chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital. However, his life's work has always evolved around genetic research. At 75, McKusick is the acknowledged founder of modern medical genetics. In the 1980s, McKusick was part of the Human Genome Project as a member of the National Academy of Sciences committee which evaluated the proposed project to determine the makeup of the entire code of the deoxyribonucleic acid. He is confident that genetics and the great emphasis being given to the human genome project will extend to other kinds of biological research in the future.

Blueprint of a star
Article Abstract:
Scientists are discovering more about the internal structure and other information about the sun because of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. The observatory, which was launched in Dec 1995, is a joint undertaking by the European Space Agency and NASA. It continuously monitors the sun through ultraviolet and visual cameras and spectrometers. The observatory's most important findings concern the speed of the sun's layers and the reheating of the sun's corona.

Good-bye, Dolly,...
Article Abstract:
The successful cloning of a sheep by Roslin Institute scientists has fueled government concerns regarding the possible misuse of the technology. Officials are afraid of the consequences of applying the technology to human beings. Cloning, however, can be used to save endangered species, increase productive livestock and enhance drug research. Policy-makers can best prevent misuse by promoting responsible cloning research.
