Three-dimensional finite element analysis of deep excavations
Article Abstract:
The hyperbolic model, which is based on the theory of elasticity, fails to simulate the elasto-plastic behavior of soils. Although the model can be used in analyzing loading problems, it cannot be used in an excavation analysis as the unloading path of the soil is nonlinear and shows hysteresis. The analysis can be vastly improved through the bounding surface model and by considering the nonlinear unloading relationships, as it may also be made more valid through other aspects of performance such as surface settlements and base heaving.

Strain localization and undrained steady state of sand
Article Abstract:
Nonuniform deformation developed with strain due to shear band formation or end restraint effects significantly influences the undrained steady state of sand. The process was demonstrated on loose sand under plane strain conditions. Results show a reduction of volumetric strain outside the shear band with strain in quasi-steady state behavior. Differences in volumetric characteristics were observed with strain in quasi-steady state behavior and the behavior at the initial stage of shear.
