Transport of phosphate from soil to surface waters by preferential flow
Article Abstract:
Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), chemicals that are used to enrich lakes and farmlands, have been found to be one of the primary causes of water pollution in the US. A comprehensive analysis on the SRP concentration and water discharge level conducted on Lake Sempach, proved that soil macropores and man-made drainage systems contribute predominantly to the vertical and lateral transport of SRP in surface waters. The finding negates the widely accepted assumption that leaching is one of the potent modes of river eutrophication.

Use of titanium nitride for electrochemical inactivation of marine bacteria
Article Abstract:
A low-resistance titanium nitride (TiN) electrode with good electrochemical stability is effective for electrochemical inactivation of marine bacteria. TiN was found to inactivate bacteria faster and with a much lower potential, without generating toxic substances than the graphite-silicon electrode or carbon-chloroprene sheet electrode. Gram-negative bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus was used in the study.

Effects of water, salt water, and silicone overcoating of the TiO2 photocatalyst on the rates and products of photocatalytic oxidation of liquid 3-octanol and 3-octanone
Article Abstract:
The addition of water during the photocatalytic oxidation of liquid 3-octanol and 3-octanone made the hydrophylic photocatalyst stay at the liquid-liquid interface and reduced the rate of CO2 evolution. NaCl, on the other hand, reduced the rate of CO2 evolution further. The photocatalyst is forced to remain dispersed in the organic phase when the TiO2 was overcoated with hydrophobic silicone.
